Koi Boyz is a family-run Koi business built from a passion that has spanned over a decade by two brothers. What began as a hobby more than 10 years ago has evolved into an enterprise dedicated to bringing the beauty, tradition, and joy of Koi keeping to customers across the United States. After years of hands-on experience in raising, and caring for Koi, the brothers officially entered the retail side of the business in 2024. The first year was spent focusing on local sales, building a loyal customer base through trust, personal service, and a deep understanding of Koi health and quality. In 2025, after establishing a strong foundation, Koi Boyz expanded into online sales and nationwide shipping, making selected Koi available to hobbyists and collectors across the country.

We have traveled near and far to offer our customers both American-bred Koi and high-quality Japanese imports, ensuring a wide selection for beginners, seasoned collectors, and everyone in between.

About Koi

Koi, also known as Nishikigoi, originated in Japan and are considered a symbol of beauty, strength, and perseverance. The word “koi” simply means carp in Japanese, and these fish were originally bred for food in Japan during the early 19th century. Farmers in the Niigata region began noticing brightly colored mutations among the common black carp and selectively bred these for their unique patterns and colors. Over time, koi evolved into ornamental fish admired for their elegance, becoming a cultural icon in Japanese gardens and ponds. Today, koi are celebrated worldwide as living art and are often associated with good fortune, prosperity, and harmony.

Types of Koi and Their Patterns

Koi come in a wide variety of colors and patterns, each with its own Japanese name and significance. The primary color variations include white, red, black, yellow, blue, and cream, often combined in striking patterns. Here are some of the most popular types:

  • Kohaku

    One of the oldest and most popular varieties, Kohaku are white koi with bold red (hi) markings. Simplicity and elegance make them a favorite among collectors.

  • Taisho Sanke (Sanke)

    One of the oldest and most popular varieties, Kohaku are white koi with bold red (hi) markings. Simplicity and elegance make them a favorite among collectors.

  • Utsurimono (Utsuri) 

    Black koi with contrasting patterns of white, red, or yellow. The three main types are Shiro Utsuri (black and white), Hi Utsuri (black and red), and Ki Utsuri (black and yellow).

  • Shusui 

    A Doitsu (scaleless) version of Asagi, Shusui have blue bodies with a single row of large scales along the dorsal line, paired with orange markings.

  • Showa Sanshoku (Showa)

    Similar to Sanke but with a black base. Showa have black, red, and white markings, creating a dramatic and powerful appearance.

  • Asagi

    Known for their blue-gray net-like scales on the back, Asagi have a pale belly with red or orange along the fins and body sides.

  • Bekko

    Solid-colored koi (white, red, or yellow) with black sumi markings scattered across the body.

  • Ogons

    Metallic-colored koi, typically gold, platinum, or silver. These solid-colored koi are admired for their brilliant shine.

  • Goshiki

    Meaning “five colors,” Goshiki koi feature a dark base with a mix of white, red, black, and blue-gray patterns.
